The origin of traditional English 4 o'clock tea

The British habit of 4 o'clock tea originated in the 19th century, thanks to Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford. During that time, it was common for people to have only two main meals a day: breakfast in the morning and a late dinner in the evening. As the Duchess found herself feeling hungry in the afternoon, she started to request a pot of tea and some light snacks to be served in her room.

This simple afternoon tea ritual quickly became a habit for the Duchess, and she began inviting friends to join her. The idea of having tea and light refreshments in the afternoon gained popularity among the upper class and eventually spread to the middle class as well. It became a social event where people would gather to enjoy tea, sandwiches, scones, and cakes.

The tradition of afternoon tea became firmly established in British culture, and it was seen as a way to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner. It provided an opportunity for people to relax, socialize, and indulge in a delightful spread of treats. The time for afternoon tea gradually settled around 4 o'clock, which became known as "4 o'clock tea" or "afternoon tea time."

Today, the British habit of 4 o'clock tea is still cherished and celebrated. Many tearooms, hotels, and restaurants offer traditional afternoon tea experiences, complete with a selection of teas, finger sandwiches, pastries, and scones with clotted cream and jam (the subject for a separate article). It has become an iconic part of British culture, representing elegance, refinement, and a moment of respite in the busy day.

So, the habit of 4 o'clock tea originated from the Duchess of Bedford's desire to satisfy her afternoon hunger, and has since become a symbol globally defining Britishness.

One final note: do NOT pour the milk into the cup before the tea! This will break with accepted etiquette!
